Flash: Nikon SB-900 Speedlight Flash Unit, Nikon Wireless speedlight commander SU-800
With Nick, I opted to go for a more refined look by having him look up into the ambient light outside in order to benefit from the flattering light angle. As can be seen from the images below, the following photos were taken. the highlights and shadows are still somewhat strong in these images (these images are unedited) but these can easily be enhanced in post edit.
After working with ambient lighting, we then looked to create a shoot-for-midnight look and turned the ISO down. This reduced exposure was compensated for by including a hot shoe mounted Flash which allowed for the subject to be separated from a darkened background. The end result can be seen below.
